Technical Difficulties

Posted in Bailout, Rants, Site News at 9:13 pm

I did not forget to write a post today. I was merely prevented from doing so. I am also very very upset with my router. This state of displeasure will persist until I am distracted by good news, however, because the router died before I could think of a creative, cathartic, and satisfying way to execute it myself. Yeah. Worst case scenario is that of all of the people who are going to be participating in tomorrow’s Brawl event, I won’t be among them. Best case scenario is that I come back from the store this evening with a router that works.

Did this stem from you trying to improve the laggy signal, or is it unrelated?

I was of the school that says of modern electronics “Once it is burned-in, it should continue to work until you pour a cup of coffee on it.”

    I am no longer.

First my router went belly-up. No idea why. Only about two years old. I started by blaming my provider, but after some troubleshooting there was no doubt. Bought a new one and all was well.

Then my home machine stated re-booting. Then it wouldn’t boot at all. I came close to trashing it and buying a whole new machine (I thought it was the power supply. Replaced it, and it still wouldn’t work.) As one last try, I unplugged and disconnected everything hooked to it. Suddenly, it worked just fine- except that I couldn’t do anything with it everything disconnected.

I started connecting things, one at a time, and when I got to my 80211-G card -bam. I realized that it was getting hot enough to fry an egg. Who knows why? Something was either cooking or shorting. Again, replaced it and everything is just fine.

The moral is: It isn’t always you- electronic components DO fail. Luckily, they’ve become relatively cheap to replace. (let’s see- about $60 for the power supply, 75 for the router and 40 for the wifi card- all since Christmas.)
