There's a difference in how the book ends and how the movie ends. The book ends with a climax and a minor amount of resolution, enough that you're interested. The movie... well, I'm sure you're all familiar with Lord of the Rings' Battle of Helm's Deep. The GC movie ends with a battle like that, only the stop halfway through it, declare that the good guys won, and just roll the credits. It's not that it's different, it's that the film's ending just plain doesn't work.

I don't know about the movie, but the first book definitely stops pretty suddenly.

I haven't read the book or seen the movie, but the reason it just stops is likely because it's based only on the first book of a series of books (the "His Dark Materials" series by Philip Pullman).

You might already know that, but if not, that's the FYI.
