Do Not Want
So. I’m normally in support of any experimentation with regards to existing properties being taken in different directions, mostly for the sheer novelty of it. But after reading the headline to this announcement from Del Rey and Marvel, my immediate reaction wasn’t just “no”. It wasn’t just “hell no”. It went even beyond “excuse me wtf r u doin”. No, this pretty much is the epitome of “what are you smoking, why haven’t you stopped, and for the love of crap please don’t share next time because that way someone might be able to stop you from carrying this idea to its end”.
Really. “X-Men Meets Fruits Basket”? And then they go ahead and try to explain it further, in the hopes that it won’t sound so dumb. It doesn’t work. Mark my words: This Will Not End Well.

If Magneto grows out his hair and opens a fetish clothing shop, I’m outta there.

Oh dear heavens, WHY? This makes no sense whatsoever other than Marvel trying to tap the popularity of the manga market at the moment. No no no no no no no.

……. Now I have that painful image stuck in my brain, Eric. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Argh.

Shockingly, there isn’t much added detail in the source story you linked.
As a PLOT, they’d need to explain how they admitted one female student (rather than just going co-ed in general). Someone in the comments wonders if it’ll be a cross-dress. If they don’t explain it somehow, then it’ll be an even more telegraphed “we’re just mimicking for the sake of it” contrivance (odd, how explaining it would be telegraphing it less).
Sadly, I can see the different X-Men as different kinds of angst held together by at least SOMEONE Tohru-like. But I’m not sure if an existing X-Men character could be the Tohru of the group.

BTW: In the comments… I remember hearing about Spider-Man Loves Mary-Jane, but I hadn’t heard about it as being manga-style. I have to admit the artwork style is very attractive and intriguing (to me, at least, hopefully that doesn’t get you all screaming)… what I see of the covers on the Wikipedia article, anyway.

I’m not sure where all the shock is coming from. Marvel has been doing stuff like this for the past ten or so years, and every time it goes over about as well as R. Kelly in a Girl Scout convention.
The original X-Men explained away having only one female student as simply being a consequence of there not being many mutants.
