I believe Rick can attest to this: on the TV Tropes website, there is a listing for “Grissom One Liner”, named after the fact that, among “CSI” programmes, at least, William Petersen as Gil Grissom is the reigning king of deliering pithy one-liners just before the opening credits. (And just last night I saw a re-run of the third season episode where Grissom delivers a one-liner, the opening credits sting begins to sound…. and then his mobile goes off and the music quickly rewinds as he goes to meet Catherine at another crime scene.) David Caruso, however…. because of his monotone delivery, and the fact that he always dramatically pauses mid-sentence to put on his sunglasses and then walks out of shot as Roger Daltrey’s famous scream begins, he is much more difficult to take seriously. (I’ve not seen enough episodes of “CSI Ny, the Science Guys” to know if they do it there as well.)
Watching these scenes, I can’t help thinking of Jim Carrey’s spoof of Caruso’s style on the Letterman show a few months ago. “You know, he was an English teacher before he became an actor. (as Caruso) I before E…. (dramatically puts on sunglasses) except after C! (walks out of shot - cue ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’, rendered by Carrey and Letterman’s in-house band)” It’s on YouTube somewhere as well.
