Pre-Essay: Thursday Notes
Hey, all. I hope you’re enjoying Essay Week as much as I’m enjoying spouting off more or less random crap that I wrote last week so I could concentrate on slacking. Anyway. Seriously, I am surprised at the reception it’s gotten so far and hope that today and tomorrow’s essays will be of equal interest. Thanks for reading them.
Now, to bore 90% of you with useless Pokemon LeafGreen trivia that you likely don’t care about. The speed run is pretty much a failure, as I’m very certain I won’t be able to clear the E4 tonight. My current levels are 66, 63, 60, 53, 42, and 25 (and those sound a bit too much like bad lottery numbers). Through somewhat clever usage of the Exp. Share last night I did advance two critters from 21 and 26 (Starmie and Ninetales, respectively; they’re the two ‘top of the lower half’). What I might consider doing is just leaving Starmie at 53, taking Ninetales to 52-55, and then prep Rhydon to the full 60 (the long haul, as I need to wait until 57 to evolve it to learn Megahorn). I don’t know as the extra five to eight levels are going to be of any huge significance during the E4 battle, but I have a handful of Rare Candies that I can distribute if I really, really need to. Regardless, it’s still a pretty quick run even if I don’t finish off the E4 until Friday night– that will tie me with my Diamond run. Even if I wait until Saturday, 22 days from start to finish is pretty good.
Which actually reminds me, the rate at which I’ve gotten good stuff out of Pickup has dropped sharply lately; I’m getting far more berries than actual useful items (of course, if this were any game other than FireRed/LeafGreen, the berries would be quite useful, but here the only real thing I can do with them is crush them into powder with the non-existent three other people over system link). I’ve tried to track down a Pickup chart for FR/LG, to no avail; I’m starting to suspect it’s just seeded with far more berries than useful items and I’ve just hit a run of bad luck.
Finally, I’m pretty certain that after I take out the E4 and capture the Legendaries/Mewtwo, I’ll be importing most of my collection over to Diamond and leaving only a skeleton crew behind. (I’ll have to nuke Surf off of Starmie first, but no big deal.) Yeah, it’ll take time– my Pokedex reads 76 now, the largest I think it’s ever shown on a Gen 1 game for me– but it will be worth it, especially as there’s a few here I’ve never actually had before (in particular: Rhyhorn/Rhydon, Venomoth, Porygon, and Tangela). And, since I intend to take a run through FireRed at some point to pick up what I missed, I can complete the Kanto ‘dex without breaking a sweat. (I actually started migrating some of the “I know I’m not going to use you here” critters.)
Anyway, enough rambling. I’ll get today’s essay set up and we’ll be good to go.

I’ve been way to busy to get through any more of my Leaf Green speed run. I’m at like 5 hours of gameplay and just conquered Lt. Surge. My one saving element is knowing that after I finish it, my second and third runs with the other two starters will me much faster since I will be able to import in my completed “good team”. Even if I have to stagger out their levels due to the lame “Pokemon isn’t listening to orders” aspect.
