can it be gams tiem now plz?
Over the past two weeks, I’ve been involved in an ongoing run of the boardgame Attack. (Sadly the game’s out of print, or I’d link that to a store what carried it.) I had to describe it to my mom as “Risk, but much more complicated.” It’s a tactical game set circa World War II (no surprise there) and its rules are pretty complex, but once you get into it (and once you have a group of friends who are willing to fudge the unpopular rules) it’s a well-spent day. And believe me, you want to set aside an entire day for this, especially if you have over four players.
Needless to say, at today’s game day, I won’t be playing it. Not because it’s a bad game (which it isn’t) or because I’ve played it already (and thus know I’m not good at it), but because I’ve played it recently and I actually want to play other games today, too. (Also, because I got trapped in Europe and only managed to survive by stalling Pez’s split of my forces.) There are a couple of other long-form games I’m not willing to get into today, chief among them Arkham Horror and Railroad Tycoon.
Still, if I had the opportunity and time to revive it, I would like to consider re-starting the old d20 Modern campaign. Modified appropriately to remove the bits that suck, of course, and probably with origins and other details rewritten completely, but more or less the same post-apoc steampunk shotguns-and-sorcery idea I started off with. Some of that was salvageable; some other bits went into Incon and Metal Rogue, actually.
Anyway. So that’s my weekend. If I don’t get enough of it today I’ll probably be playin’ Catan on the 360 tomorrow, too. Because too much of a good thing is something something. Y’know.
