Mmmmmyeah, we’re gonna have to reuse some props

One of the most irritating things about television is the advertisements. They’re a necessary evil, of course; the alternative is all-pay television, which actually wouldn’t be so bad if there wasn’t the problem of getting everyone to pay for it. But some advertisements go too far. Case in point, a particular advertisement for a cut-rate car insurance company known for having a stupid jingle. The most recent set of ads for this company are positively fixated on this jingle. This would not have attracted my attention except that I happened to notice the name plate on the desk of the presenter. It read “Bill Lumbergh”.

Immediately afterwards, a second commercial came on with the familiar (to me, anyway) sight of snow coming at a windshield. The familiar strains of the Star Trek theme began playing, sans Shatnerlogue. The camera zoomed back to show the inside of a Hummer.

And that’s when I started screaming.

And you woke up to find it was all a bad dream?

I had a bad dream last night about installations and CD keys and game launches. >_

Wait wait, the actual theme? Or a song that could sound similar? That’s… well, it would have a licensing fee at the least.

I’ve seen Shatner and (possibly Keonig) hawking for one of the next gen DVD formats in a commercial that first culls from Star Trek VI and then blends in new footage. They do a pretty good job, for the length of the commercial, of a segue where it DOESN’T look like Shatner’s suddenly looking older than he did in 1991… granted, if you were to pause the commercial it might crack the illusion, but for the purposes of the airtime it works. I say possibly Keonig because I’m not sure if he had to record anything for the commercial or if it was just ST6 footage.

Of course, I possibly have reservations about them hawking a next gen DVD format… though I have to admit the commercial hit a “cool” bone in my body where my only real reservation is that they should’ve waited for one winner and then hawked for it.

Have you ever seen the Austin Powers trailer that riffed on Star Wars?

One Eight Hundred Saf…. oh wait, I guess that might be too much.

*Doesn’t want to get fired for hating the theme song*
