Ouch, I feel for your wallet, man - that's a nasty thing to happen. However, you might want to consider yourself somewhat lucky that it happened when you had money, as opposed to after you had spent most of your paycheck already.

As for Haruhi, the first episode is completely different from the rest of the series, and should not really be considered a first episode (since chronologically it fits in much later, and ep 2 is what introduces all the characters). You'll find episode 1 to be a lot more enjoyable to watch after you've seen the full series. Personally though I loved the first ep and hated the rest - it seems you might be the opposite (as most others are).

John,

Specifically, episode 1 is entirely unlike the series... well, other than what kind of narrator Kyon is.

Actually people weren't crazy about the show with episode 1, but episode 2 is when it became a phenomenon. Mind you, episode 1 has its role in affairs, and Grey did like it better than the rest of the series.

Sounds like any number of my days this week. Let's just say "new boss", and leave it at that.
Thankfully, the first episode is NOT an indicator of what Haruhi is like through the whole series. Though I had my doubts at first, too. I just figured I'd mov on to the next episode and hope it wasn't as painful. It wasn't. ^_^
