Balancing Act

Posted in Gaming, Site News, Writing at 9:05 pm

So, depending on if you read the forums or not, you may be aware of the anonymous critique depot I set up at http://critique.thefurryone.net. It runs on Kareha, a very slick Perl-based variant of the Wakaba imageboard setup. And while I may have… shall we say, “borrowed”… some design elements from other imageboards, I’m actually very pleased with getting it up and running this morning. It’s very easy to set up and administer, and I don’t foresee any problems. I hope it will see some use.

That said, I did absolutely no writing of my own this weekend. None whatsoever. I’d done some non-novel writing last week, which just served to irritate me even more as I was unable to focus on the novel itself. I did wind up writing 20 pages of memories from college. And it’s only got about half of the things I really wanted to put in there– maybe less than half. Some of it is personal, and some of it is sort of shocking, even by my own standards. The idea at the time was to just go ahead and get it all down, get it out and to a point where someone could read it, even if that someone is just me. Which reminds me, one of these days I’m going to have to compile the Open Diary backup and the first version of the TFOnet Blog into a huge text file. The OD is about 1 MB of text by itself (but it includes reader comments). And no, I haven’t forgotten about getting a read-only version of the old forums up, either. Just haven’t exactly been motivated to do it, for whatever reason.

I need to regain some of that motivation that I had, that I usually have. This weekend I slacked off terribly, and if I hadn’t actually managed to get the critique boards done I’d be extremely pissed off that I wasted an entire weekend. I didn’t really “waste” it, though; I did go see Pirates of the Caribbean, and came away… frustrated. I recommend you go see it, but don’t expect to leave the theater feeling too happy. It’s a great movie, except for the last ten minutes. That said, I’m hoping it pulls a reverse Matrix and comes away with a solid third film. It damn well better.

In terms of gaming, not much to report. Haven’t progressed beyond 37 in CoH yet, haven’t played more WA4, haven’t touched FFXI in a week and a half (due to being stuck in Selbina, where I’ll have to wait hours for a party). I did reclaim Meteos last week– not sure if I mentioned it– and I’ve been enjoying that far more than should really be legal. Play-Asia is running a pretty good sale, and has the Japanese version of Rez for a scant $10. It’s cheap and unresellable, meaning I’ll never be without the game again; come next week, I am SO all over that. I don’t intend to pick up a new RPG until I finish WA4 or until FFXII comes out (and I do have my preorder in already for it).

My plan for the coming week is to dedicate myself to writing the novel in the mornings, and to begin my blitz-assault through WA4 in the evenings. I do want to try to finish one or the other before the end of July, and I’m pretty sure I can; CoH is starting to wear just an eensy bit thin of late, so I decided to take a break from that (putting my crusade to 50 on hold yet again).

I’ve not been sleeping well this week, either. So as strange as it may seem, I’m off to bed. I set my alarm early, so I’ll be able to get some uninterrupted writing time in before I get ready for work. I’ll try to write more often here, as well.

Later, folks. Oh, please try to spread the word about the critique site to your author friends, if you would.

John, you may want to think about it being password protected/hidden. If someone is trying to get something published, having it public on the internet is counted by most publishers as being the ‘first edition’ or ‘first run’. Publishers generally want first edition rights to storys and novels they buy, so even if it’s the next Harry Potter, odds are they’ll pass on it.

For things like fan fic and whatnot, though, I’d be all about it.

I’m actually a little curious to know if that counts for an excerpt of a work. For example, if I were to post an 8K chunk of “Game of Lords” on the board, would that invalidate the entire work?

I have to admit, one person I know who might like the feedback would be wary to put it there because it would be out there for all to see with no way of claiming it is hers.

I’ll read there… not that I have writing time these days, but I’m not sure I’d use that forum for writing…

John, from what the people at Scribes have told me, yes it would. I’ll see if I can find the link and share it.
