I think one difference is the cost. Everyone knows iBooks cost more, and so think you're showing off by owning one. There's also the fringe effect - anything that is less popular is automatically the alternative, and there are some who will always flock to the that purely because it *is* the alternative. And with the modern gaming industry many associate themselves with Nintendo because they look down on the younger games that don't remember it's heyday. And then there's the crazy ones who really are just obsessive freaks... It's not necessarily anything to do with the products themselves, just the sort of market they appeal to and end up deliberately marketing too.

Ah, but Windows and Playstation supporters are stupid, common dicks, not pretentious, self-important dicks. The latter seems to piss people off more than the former.

Rob, you're right that some Apple and Nintendo "supporters" (users?) are pretentious dicks, but there are also a large number of dick-headed Windows and Playstation fans out there, too. Clearly, not ALL Apple, Nintendo, Windows, or Playstation fans are pretentious dicks. But it seems to be some kind of competitive human nature to think in general terms like that. I use Apple computers and I rather like them. I also use Windows computers. I don't think I'm a pretentious dick, but sometimes people approach me like I am, just because of the iBook on my lap. I don't know what makes people do that. It's one of humanity's greatest mysteries.

You forgot to mention that a large number of Apple and Nintendo supporters are pretentious, self-important dicks, and people start to see every one of them as being like that.

It drives me nuts sometimes to see stuff like this. Too many people are giving hate a bad name.

If you're going to hate something, be fair and hate all things equally.
